[mini post] Find your core values to guide you

What are your top three values? When was the last time you updated them?

Our values go hand in hand with our actions. They have an influence on our daily decisions – and therefore on our whole lives – whether we are aware of it or not.

There are many benefits of recognizing your core values. For example, life can get simpler and more meaningful when you know your core values because they help you to choose from various options, and some of the decision situations vanish altogether.

You may connect with other people who share your values, and some uncomfortable situations can be easier to tolerate when you are true to yourself.

Out of so many options, how can you rank the most important values for you?

One handy way to define your core values is to think what kind of people and actions you appreciate or admire the most, and what things/actions you enjoy and find meaningful.

You can also find your core values by thinking of things that make you angry, sad or frustrated – why they make you feel that way?

Values are like fingerprints. Nobody's are the same, but you leave 'em all over everything you do.
-Elvis Presley

Here are some examples of core values:

  • Family & friends
  • Nature
  • Freedom
  • Adventure
  • Equality
  • Appreciation
  • Justice
  • Creativity
  • Service
  • Curiosity
  • Kindness
  • Love
  • Nature
  • Wealth
  • Harmony
  • Wellbeing
  • Positivity
  • Humanity
  • Honesty
  • Growth
  • Leadership
  • Joy
  • Beauty
  • Security
  • Perseverance

Of course your core values may be more precise and personal too.

And when you have defined your top values, you get to the influential part, a part that will test you: aligning your actions with your values, to actually live them.

Value used only as a spoken or written word is worth almost nothing, it becomes relevant and valuable only when it's used as a verb, things done in practice.
